Clean Up Australia Day is Sunday, 2nd March.

Now in its 35th year, Clean Up Australia Day is Australia’s largest community-based environmental event.

How Plastic Pollution Harms Ocean Animals

Why Clean Ups Matter!

  • Around 8 - 10 MILLION TONNE of plastic waste enters the ocean every year from the land, most often washed out in storm water from litter.
  • Plastic has been found in the Mariana Trench – the deepest part of the ocean 10,975 meters down in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean.
  • The Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the South Pacific Garbage Patch are just two of five known plastic accumulation zones, formed by rotating ocean currents (gyres) in the ocean.
  • If we don’t reduce our use of plastic, the trajectory says there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050 (by mass)

Want to get involved in Clean Up Australia? Here’s how:

Join a Clean Up event near you or start your own!

✓ Sort recyclables & dispose of waste responsibly.

✓ Track and report your data to inform the Clean Up Australia Annual Rubbish Report, which helps organisations like the CSIRO to create new strategies to tackle rubbish in our environment.

✓ Share your efforts! Tag @CleanUpAustralia and use #CleanUpAustralia to inspire others.

✓ Don't forget to bring your own reusable water bottle!

Did you know Clean Up Australia Day includes special days for businesses and schools? A Business Clean Up is a fantastic way to engage your team, strengthen corporate responsibility, and make a real impact.

And remember, you don’t have to wait for a special day to take action. Every day is a chance to help keep rubbish - especially plastic waste - out of our oceans, rivers, and environment! A quick search online will likely find you a community clean up planned near you, or start your own!
